Below is a long blog post about 1984, George Orwell’s classic novel. The story of Winston Smith and his fight against the totalitarian regime in Oceania, as well as his love affair with Julia that brings him to rebellion. This article has been divided into two parts: this one will cover some interesting facts about the book; the other part is dedicated to an analysis on it which you can find here. Enjoy! Written between 1945-1947 by British author Eric Arthur Blair (better known under the pen name “George Orwell”), who had served in Burma for several years prior to World War II, was published in England first time in June 16th, 1949, and in USA second year later, at January 20th, 1950. In 1943 the writer suffered from tuberculosis after being wounded during the Spanish Civil War while fighting for the Republican side, so he decided to stay back in London recovering until World War II ended. During these times spent alone writing he finished his magnum opus Nineteen Eighty Four. He died at January 21st, 1950 due to bronchial pneumonia. The term “Big Brother”, referring to the leader of the nation where the action takes place, became widely used since then when describing any powerful entity watching its citizens. This expression originated in this novel itself and although many people think it comes from Nazi Germany, there are no historical records stating such fact. Some historians also argue that Hitler wasn’t even alive yet because the book was written before his rise. Nevertheless, Big Brothers like Vladimir Putin or Xi Jinping could be considered modern equivalents to the figure presented in 1984. Inside this dystopia ruled by fascism there exists a ruling party called INGSOC – English Socialist Party -, headed by the mysterious character named “Big Brother”. However, they don’t exist physically but only virtually through telescreens placed all around their country, hence why everyone must worship them as gods despite knowing nothing about them except what is told every day via propaganda messages broadcast throughout the whole society.
