So I stopped typing in favor of letting my thoughts flow from one thing into the next until there was no more room for new ideas to find their way onto the screen. It took days (and nights) but I finally finished this blog entry earlier today… over two months later! That’s how much stuff I had going through my mind during those days. My husband has been trying to help me organize some of these thoughts by asking questions like “So what are you actually saying here?” But he may as well have asked “What color should we paint the living room?”. I can never answer his questions with any kind of clarity or confidence. All I know is that whatever I say right now will be completely different if given just ten minutes to think again. And so it goes…. The point is: Life is still happening all around us; sometimes things happen that make us feel good inside, other times they bring tears to our eyes, others yet remind us why humanity needs Jesus Christ, and even at its worst moments life brings forth beauty in ways we cannot predict nor explain. One day after the election, when Hillary Clinton lost her bid for President of the United States against Donald Trump, an unexpected crowd formed outside the New York Hilton Hotel where she gave her concession speech. They began singing “Lean On Me” – something most Americans associate with Bill Withers’ famous song released back in ’73. The people standing there didn’t sing it simply because they wanted to express love towards each other, however. Their voices echoed with sadness and despair, mourning the fact that half of America was celebrating while the rest felt defeated and angry. Instead of comforting them with hugs, many responded in anger themselves. Some shouted phrases such as “Go home!” and “You suck!” while others screamed threats such as “Fuck your face!” and “Burn in hell.” Yet somehow amidst all of that hate someone decided to lead everyone else in singing “Lean On Me”, which caused the entire group to break into spontaneous applause - showing that beneath all the hatred lay human compassion and empathy waiting to shine brightly once more. This year made me realize that regardless who wins elections or wars rage across countries full of innocent men women & children being slaughtered indiscriminately without mercy or regard for anything besides power politics, corruption remains rampant among politicians everywhere including our own nation where greedy corporations manipulate public opinion using fear tactics designed specifically target demographic groups whom Republicans believe don Below is a long blog post about 2019, but I wanted to share it with you before the new year.
