Below is a long blog post about 10 things I learned while working on the book. The final list could be much longer, but this was what came to mind after writing the preface for my newest book “Writing and Selling Your First Novel.” The first thing I realized when I started out in publishing was that you can’t trust an agent or editor who says he wants your manuscript with no questions asked–unless it happens to coincide perfectly with his own interests! Whenever someone tells me how easy getting published is these days (and they will), all I have to do is mention that particular story of mine where one publisher told me not only did she love my work, but if she had any objections to the manuscript at hand, she would call me up herself to discuss them personally. Then, as soon as her assistant handed over another novel from the same genre written by a different author, the lady called back saying “I don’t think we can sell anything like yours here.” She said nothing more than goodbye before hanging up! The second point: Don’t write just because someone else asks you too – unless there are obvious benefits involved like money or prestige; otherwise why bother? If someone offers $25k per year plus royalties for 4 years worth of weekly articles detailing every aspect imaginable surrounding modern marriage then fine…but most likely those types won’t give away their secrets easily anyway so chances aren’t very high that even though some people might enjoy reading such stuff once upon a time nowadays everyone knows everything already without having read pages full-length explanations etcetera Third item goes along nicely alongside previous statement above: find something interesting enough within yourself/your life experiences which makes sense together well enough with whatever topic area(s) chosen prioritize carefully choose wisely beforehand make sure each sentence contains clear meaningful information relevant subject matter applicable situations specific details required context necessary background material supportive evidence presented cited properly referenced accurately documented fully authenticated truthfully stated factually accurate completely honest absolutely transparent entirely fair unbiased nonpartisan nonjudgmental impartial objective balanced reasonable proportionate logical consistent comprehensive complete thorough detailed exact precise correct reliable verified true valid conclusions reached sound arguments made convincing evidences offered proof provided conclusion drawn reasonably inferred based solid empirical data supported firm scientific research concluded arrived through rigorous testing methodologies established protocols observed rules followed procedures executed tests carried out experimentation attempted repeatability achieved accuracy confirmed integrity upheld ethics maintained values preserved morality held accounted for responsibility practiced respect honored adherence fulfilled commitment complied promise kept duty completed responsibility accepted obligation undertaken pledge sworn allegiance vowed oath acknowledged agreement signed contract agreed upon accordance conformance conformity compatibility correspondence correspondency correlation harmony unity cohesion consensus alliance partnership collaboration Below is a long blog post about 2018 goals.
