Below is a long blog post about 10 years of The Hive, so if you’re not interested in the story behind this company and what it has been up to for over a decade now then don’t bother reading on. This year marks an important milestone as we celebrate our tenth anniversary since opening doors back in October 2009 - a time when many people were still struggling with the global financial crisis that started three months beforehand (October being the month Lehman Brothers collapsed). At least one person wasn’t worried though because they had just bought their first home which happens to be where I am sitting right now! Let me tell you how my path took me here… I was born into entrepreneurialism. My parents owned restaurants growing up so there was always something happening at work or during summer holidays helping out around town while earning some extra money along side school days spent playing video games like Sonic And Knuckles & Mario Kart 64 until sunset every night after dinner arrived fresh off chef-made pizzas served by waitresses dressed head-to-toe in red uniforms looking nothing short than sexy cheerleaders serving food straight from ovens baking inside brick buildings built centuries ago underground beneath streets lined full width cars moving slowly towards destinations unknown except maybe somewhere near mine today? It’s about the most recent developments of 3d printers, and also about some interesting ways to use them (such as making your own prosthetic limbs). It was written when there were only two or three home-made 3d printable objects on Thingiverse which had been produced by hobbyists with desktop machines - now you can find thousands! I’ve always found it slightly odd how popular 3d modelling software such as Maya, ZBrush etc have become; if anything they seem like a bit of an unnecessary barrier between creativity – i.e designers/art directors having ideas and then getting someone else to interpret those into something physical. In fact the way things are going at the moment we may well soon see these programs being used more just to generate gorgeous images rather than actual models. However, what has interested me recently is seeing all sorts of people who don’t consider themselves ‘digital artists’ creating 3d printed objects from their own designs without any specialist training. The first thing that comes to mind here would be children: why not let them build models out of plasticine before sending them off to have them made in acrylic? Or even better let them make a model using a 3d scanner so they get to touch everything too…
