Below is a long blog post about 100+ year old beer brands. I’ve written it for the benefit of my friends in the industry, but there are probably some readers out here who will find parts interesting as well! This weekend marks the return of one of America’s most storied brewing companies – Anheuser-Busch (AB). With its purchase by InBev two years ago and subsequent rebranding to Budweiser Brewing Group, this storied brand has been missing from American shelves since June of last year. While much was made at that time regarding AB’s move into canned craft beers with Goose Island Beer Company, we have yet to see any meaningful movement on those products. The only other new product they launched under their own label earlier this month were limited edition “Santa’s Little Helper” holiday ales which they produced together with a handful of smaller regional partners. But now comes news that AB will finally get back into the regular beer business this summer when they introduce several mainstream national brands again: Michelob ULTRA, Natural Light, Busch and Old Milwaukee. When AB left the marketplace over eighteen months ago they did so because they could no longer compete effectively against the growing number of independent craft brewers. Even though they had been losing share for many years prior, they decided that it would simply take too much money to fight off their competitors via advertising and promotions alone. Instead, they chose to withdraw until such a point where their rivals weakened sufficiently enough to make them more palatable targets once again. This strategy might have worked if not for the fact that competition continued unabated during the intervening period. Many small breweries grew large enough that they started to dominate local markets while others found themselves being acquired en masse by larger players like Boston Beer or Constellation Brands. Meanwhile, all of these newly formed giants began fighting amongst each other across different regions of the country. At the same time, the overall size of the market expanded significantly due to increased interest among consumers. To say nothing of an influx of imports arriving directly onto our shores after Canada lowered tariffs on American beer three years ago. As you may imagine, this created quite a logjam out there resulting in massive price increases for everyone involved. So what happened next? Well…let me tell ya tale! In October of 2017, AB announced plans to create four separate divisions within itself known collectively as AB Inbev North America. They hired former MillerCoors executive Michael Doucette away from Molson Coors International along with five additional executives responsible solely for managing each division.
