Below is a long blog post about 2019, but I wanted to start with some pictures. Here’s the first one: I took this photo of my parents and me last New Year in their backyard at sunset. It was such an amazing moment that it still makes me cry every time I think of it (and yes, we are all crying). My mom had terminal cancer for many years before she passed away in March, so seeing us together like this made everything feel right again – just as normal as if nothing terrible were happening around us. The light from behind them seemed almost too bright; maybe because it felt good knowing they would live on through us? Who knows… But what matters most here isn’t where or how these people ended up being photographed—it’s who they represent within each frame: family members who love one another deeply despite whatever obstacles life throws our way.* *Or even better yet: when those challenges make things easier instead harder! On top of that, they booked me as part of their special themed night - which I thought would give me some fun inspiration for choosing songs/themes… until someone pointed out that theme nights often involve costumes, and that perhaps isn’t such a good idea for musicians whose main job involves sitting behind a piano playing notes…. hmmm. But hey, no worries; I had something else up my sleeve … well, more of a ‘hat’, really. If anyone from The Stags’ team happens to read this, please don’t feel bad or offended in any way! This was purely for entertainment purposes only, after all :) For those unfamiliar with the legendary hat-based musical extravaganza known around these parts as “The Hats Off Show”, here’s a little snippet from last year’s show: Inspired by all things festive, glittering, sparkling, gold and red, my plan was simple yet bold - to make myself look as ridiculous as possible while simultaneously taking advantage of the opportunity to dress to impress in ways that wouldn’t normally come naturally to me without being judged too harshly..? After all, why not try something new once in awhile??
