As far as we know, no one had ever seen a proof for this conjecture before; the best previous result was showing that any planar drawing satisfying the conditions above would require at least five colors when all sixteen of its triangular faces were coloured black/white according to whether they shared exactly three sides (i.e., were convex) or not. The question then arose as to whether a planar drawing could colour all these faces white while requiring fewer than five colours for everything else. In early October, we found a solution which uses just eight colors, but requires the restriction that exactly half of the hexagons formed by the intersections of the edges are coloured red, blue, green, yellow, purple or brown*. We recently completed work showing how to use only seven colors under slightly less restrictive assumptions — namely, that only half of these hexagonal regions need to contain a single fixed colour rather than having the same colour occupy exactly half of them. The main technical tool used throughout is something called the “weak product” which essentially replaces the traditional notion of multiplying graphs by instead considering certain functions from the adjacency matrices of the graphs into the complex numbers. It turns out that products of weakly linked matrices yield weakly connected graphs whereas ordinary matrix multiplication does not. There are many other important applications too, including several new characterizations of strongly regular matroids and ways of constructing families of infinite graphs which satisfy various nice properties. For now though let us focus on the specific application relevant to the triangle colouring problem. Since the original version of the triangle colouring conjecture allows arbitrary choices of incident angles for the edges we will take care to specify what sort of configurations we want to allow.
