I remember that day as if it were yesterday because of my brother’s birthday which also fell on this date - he would have been one year older than myself. There are only three people who still refer to me by my middle name: my husband, my sister Linda and my daughter Kimberly. And she calls me Mama. That makes four folks out of all my family members including grandkids. The other nickname I prefer and use whenever possible is Mimi (pronounced Me-Me). My childhood memories seem very vague from age zero through eight years of school before sixth grade. During those early days I felt like an observer rather than partaking actively in life itself. All my senses seemed heightened during these times; everything looked more vibrant and colorful, sounded clearer, smelled stronger, tasted sweeter, felt warmer/cooler – especially my mother’s arms wrapped around me while rocking back and forth comfortingly singing to me “Rockabye Baby.” I can see her patting her cheek with powder puff and hear the clickety-clack of nylons being put on over wool stockings. When I look at photos taken then, I think they capture beautiful moments in time and reflect who I really am inside even though they don’t show what happened afterwards–the growth process that occurred slowly over many years due to traumas experienced later on after moving away from home at eighteen months old; leaving behind friends & neighbors who loved you dearly along side those whom hated seeing your face come near them again….
