You can also read it on Medium here: https://medium.com/@david_98546/the-year-that-was-2017-8e3bcdcddaed It’s been an interesting year in many ways, and I thought that since this was my last post of the year (I take December off), I might as well write something longer than usual to commemorate it all… It helps me to make sense out of things! There will be some personal stuff mixed with techie and philosophical posts, so let us begin! Let’s start at home first :) My wife gave birth to our daughter at the end of March. She’s now 7 months old — she doesn’t look like it though ;) — and we are both delighted by her progress every day; however, there has not been much time for anything else besides taking care of her during these past few months. Being a father does change your perspective somewhat. We have decided to live nearer to family now too, which means moving again next month or two but hopefully finding somewhere nice enough where you actually want to stay for more than a couple years. Oh, and I finally bought myself a new pair of glasses after using those cheap ones from Boots for over ten years already! In terms of work, 2017 was pretty busy overall. My company had several important projects going on throughout most of the year, including one large web application built entirely in AngularJS, another major project building a mobile app using React Native, and then quite a bit of maintenance work on legacy code written in ASP .NET MVC / C# before that. At least half a dozen other smaller projects were completed as well along with various internal tools and bug fixes, while we also tried to keep up with everything related to JavaScript libraries such as Bootstrap and jQuery. As always, most development took place inside Visual Studio for Windows, although GitLab and GitHub did get used frequently. Finally, I spent almost no time working directly with PHP anymore because none of our clients wanted WordPress websites any longer… which made life easier to say the least!! Now, onto some technology talk…. This was definitely THE YEAR OF REACT NATIVE!!! That alone deserves its own paragraph. If you don’t know what it is yet, think of Facebook’s Instagram and Messenger apps - they use React instead of native code underneath their iOS & Android versions. However, unlike those popular social media platforms (which rely heavily upon Adobe Flash), React is actually open source software developed independently outside of Apple Inc., Google LLC etcetera. In fact, anyone can download the free version today without even having access to Xcode itself!
