Some people say that 3-d printers will replace factories and make everyone an artist. But what if they don’t? What if this new technology just gives us more choices? More options for how we create things? That’s not such bad thing — especially when you consider all of the wastefulness inherent in our current production model. The more I think about 3-D printing, the more excited I become! For those who are unfamiliar with the concept: basically, instead of using molds (which can be expensive) to fabricate products from plastic, 3-D printers take digital information as input, then turn out solid objects by adding material layer after layer until they reach their final form. These machines have been around since the early ‘80s but nowadays consumer versions cost anywhere between $25K-$1M depending on size and sophistication. So why should anyone care about them? Well let me tell ya’. . . Let’s start off by defining exactly what 3-D Printing means because there seems so many different names floating around today like rapid prototyping , additive manufacturing etc.. So before going further lets define some terms : Rapid Prototyping = A process which uses computer software programs based on CAD files generated by engineers & designers who plan physical designs prior making anything real world object like cars parts etc… Additive Manufacture also known as AM whereby materials are added together incrementally through one or multiple layers forming complete three dimensional shapes rather than being shaped by cutting away excessive amount during subtractive processes used traditionally e g machining metal work wood working etc…. In addition these two words are often interchangeably used when referring same subject matter however technically speaking true meaning behind both terminologies differ substantially enough warrant separate discussion altogether thus resulting confusion among public due misuse misinterpretations abound amongst general population at large unfortunately given lack proper knowledge surrounding topic under consideration herein attempt clarify matter once again providing clarification needed moving forward Now that definitions covered let continue exploring fascinating possibilities offered innovative advancements found within field currently referred collectively term “additive” otherwise known simply put “3 D Prints”. First question arise pertaining availability accessibility such equipment itself given wide array applications ranging everything medical devices automotives aviation architecture even construction industry alone offers endless opportunities possibility application potential far exceed imagination alone without any doubt truth spoken here loud clear ! I am writing this entry on December 31, 2013 at around 5 PM with less than two hours left for me to officially welcome 2014!
