Below is a long blog post about 7/10, but first I want to point you over at CJ’s place. You know the one? The one that has been doing nothing BUT posting on 8/29? Well she had some more things today and it was SO good! And not just because of what happened in her classroom (although THAT part totally made me laugh). She also talks about other stuff going on this week with her family which was sweet. Anyway….here are my thoughts from yesterday: I have had a couple people tell me they don’t like July 4th as well. It isn’t all rainbows for them either. They hate fireworks or think we should be having our own “Independence Day” celebrations instead of making such an issue out of someone else’s holiday. If only life could be so simple…. So then there were those who celebrated Independence Day by remembering how much they love America. How grateful they feel to live here. What freedom means to them personally. That makes sense too. So many people died for us to enjoy these freedoms today. We can take pride in being Americans without disrespecting others. I get both sides and understand why each person thinks differently on the subject. But I will still choose to celebrate our country any day if given half a chance. Even when things aren’t perfect-which they never really are anyway-we are lucky enough to live where we do. A lot of places would kill for our problems right now. And it isn’t always about politics. Sometimes its about loving the land itself. Being born and raised here does make it easier. You learn early on just what kind of beauty we hold within ourselves. But even for newcomers-who come from countries far away and completely different backgrounds than most of their neighbors around them-they quickly see what makes our land special. When I moved west, I learned quickly. There is no grass, mountains everywhere, cactus growing next door…and yet everyone seems happy. My parents thought we were nuts moving across the country and starting fresh somewhere entirely unfamiliar. For me though-it wasn’t scary; it felt safe. Somehow I knew this was home too. This time, I finally understood what patriotism meant. Not something I was taught at school every year on Flag Day. Nor did I feel pressured into believing certain political views in order to be considered loyal citizens. Nope. All I needed to know was that my country provided safety for me. Freedom. Opportunity. Peace among strangers. Love. Those are words I cannot find anywhere else in this world. Which is exactly why I am proud to say I was born American. Why I appreciate everything my husband fights for daily while serving his country abroad. Why I believe in Below is a long blog post about 24 things I’ve learnt from running my own business.
