Please note this isn’t an endorsement of any particular company or product but rather my take on some interesting ideas shared by people who had something useful to say. It was just under a year ago that one of the most successful fund managers around, Bill Gross from PIMCO fame, pounded his fist down on the table after getting asked if he thought stock prices were too high during the time leading into the election. He said they weren’t yet – that would come later when the economy got better. In fact, he didn’t think anyone could tell whether the market was overvalued until interest rates started moving higher. Then everyone will know. That moment came earlier than expected given today’s low interest rate environment, but it did arrive and Mr. Market has spoken loudly since last November, taking the S&P index back below levels reached prior to Election Day. That doesn’t mean all hope is lost though. Despite the recent correction many economists still expect real growth ahead thanks to stronger global demand especially coming from China which remains the world’s largest importer despite slowing economic activity there. A large chunk of the profits companies like Boeing make are due to sales in Asia where China now accounts for half the worldwide orders received each month according to Bloomberg News. This means even more new aircraft needed by Chinese airlines flying ever-more passengers throughout the region. And yes, China also wants to buy American natural gas produced by frackers in Pennsylvania & Texas to power electric plants that produce the energy used to fly planes! So while Wall Street can have short term ups and downs depending on news flow, the underlying trends remain positive longer term. It’s not that I have nothing else to say, but rather that it would be too much trouble to condense all the things we did into one brief sentence! The year started with our annual trip to Bali in January and February for the first leg of the school holidays as well as a few weeks after the kids had returned to Australia when they were home during semester break. The highlight was spending some time at Tanah Lot on New Year’s Day where we watched sunrise over the ocean before exploring the temple grounds and enjoying the view from its cliff top position. We also spent many days relaxing by the beach or pool, reading books, shopping, trying out new restaurants (and re-visiting old favourites), visiting museums, taking cooking classes, cycling around Ubud and going on an elephant ride through the jungle - just like you do… Oh wait, actually we didn’t go on any elephant rides this year so maybe next time? After returning from Indonesia we celebrated my Dad’s birthday and then went back down south again for my Mum’s birthday which fell shortly afterwards. This trip took us up along the Queensland coast to Airlie Beach via Brisbane where I got stuck into my second book writing project – another recipe collection aimed at beginner chefs called “Cook Real Food” which will hopefully come out later this year. We stayed at a lovely eco resort near Bundaberg called Budds Beach Resort and learned how to make honeycomb ice cream whilst watching turtles swim past! Our journey continued north towards Cairns staying at the delightful Twin Falls Ecolodge close to Kuranda Rainforest Village followed by three nights camping amongst trees deep within the rain forest itself. We enjoyed walking the Skyrail cableway across Mount Windsor, seeing crocodiles and wallabies roaming free through their natural habitat at Wildlife Habitat Park, cruising Lake Barron aboard a houseboat and checking out historic Port Douglas. Finally, once our budget ran low, we caught a cheap flight back to Melbourne. While working fulltime teaching at RMIT University, I continue my role as Vice President of the Australian Society of Authors (ASA) Victoria branch. My committee met regularly throughout the year and organised several events including workshops, guest speakers, networking opportunities and social gatherings such as Christmas drinks last month. In June ASA Vic hosted a talk entitled “Writing Your First Novel” presented by best selling author, Liane Moriarty who has written eleven novels including her latest release Truly Madly Guilty. She shared tips and advice for aspiring novelists based upon her own Below is a long blog post about 15 reasons why I think the new iPhone X, iOS and Apple Watch will be a big deal. The fact that Apple has managed to get the full screen display into their flagship phone for under $1000 without sacrificing on quality or features is going to make this version of the smartphone really popular amongst consumers who have been waiting for an affordable solution from one of its competitors. With Android phones like Google’s Pixel already offering similar designs at lower prices there could also soon become more competition in terms of design too! It remains to be seen if Samsung can come up with something equally impressive given how far ahead they are currently leading when it comes down to actual performance though… Apple’s iPhone X release date, pricing and specs: Everything you need to know It looks set to change everything we thought we knew about our phones – but what does it mean? And should you buy one? Here’s what experts say… Apple unveiled three brand-new iPhones at last week’s event, including its most expensive model yet - here’s all you need to know about them as well as any other news surrounding these devices and future releases from Cupertino…… iPhone SE Release Date Rumours: What We Know So Far About The Cheap Smartphone There was no mention made by Tim Cook during his keynote address today regarding whether or not such rumors were true—but let us take some time now before diving headfirst into what else might be coming our way over these next few months! Myth #1: You can’t eat carbs after 5 p.m., or they will turn into fat in your body right away! The fact is we are just not designed for fast food like this – it causes inflammation and disease.
