Below is a long blog post about 2018, which was not originally written for this website. I’m going to do something I don’t normally do with my annual review posts: start by talking in general terms about the year as a whole, and then break down what worked well and less so. The idea here being that if you’re reading far enough into this thing – congratulations! You are either on your way or have already achieved financial independence (FI). In those cases, it might be helpful to see how we got there over time. If that doesn’t describe where you are now though, hopefully some of these takeaways will help you get started making progress towards FI yourself. And if you are just starting out, at least know you aren’t alone when it comes to learning about finance. Here goes… Financial Independence: A Definition & How We Got There This past January marked our fifth anniversary since first setting out on an intentional path toward Financial Independence (FI), otherwise known as “retiring early”. Since we reached FI earlier than anticipated last September, we are officially retired today; but I guess technically speaking never retire unless you die. Regardless of semantics, I thought it would be interesting to look back over the past five years from both personal standpoint along with looking at the evolution of Money Mustache itself, to see exactly how all this has happened. So without further ado…here is the story thus far: Years of Saving vs Time Invested If money were really easy, everyone who wanted more of it would simply earn more cash through hard work and then keep spending their life savings until they had no choice except to save even harder again next month. But instead most people seem hellbent upon doing precisely that - working themselves ragged while complaining bitterly about having too little free time to enjoy life. This is not only true among non-rich folks like ourselves, but also among many richer people whom I personally observe to be very miserable with their lives despite having everything one could want right underneath them. It appears clear to me that most humans need a goal beyond merely accumulating dollars, and that goal needs to be specific rather than vague (“have lotsa $$” isn’t good enough.) The solution? Find ways to increase net worth faster than income each month. This means focusing on increasing sources of passive income which can continue growing over longer periods of time, such as investments and real estate rentals. On top of this, make sure all expenses stay low relative to incoming funds, whether earned directly via employment or indirectly via entrepreneurship/side hustles etc..
