One of the things I’ve learned from my kids, especially in the last year or so, as they’ve become more independent and confident in their abilities to do things on their own, that when you give them something new and ask for help with it – there are always people who will jump at the chance to teach someone else how to do what they know (and love). This was my second CCCCs but the first without any official responsibilities attached to it since finishing grad school several years ago. While my schedule included some business meetings such as attending the Business Meeting (and voting), chairing sessions (which I really enjoyed) and meeting up with old friends, most of my time consisted of simply listening to other presenters talk about topics related to writing instruction. These conversations reaffirmed both how little I knew when I started teaching freshman composition fourteen years ago while also showing me just how far I still needed to go in terms of becoming better equipped to address issues facing today’s college writers. As well as helping me feel less alone in certain areas of expertise, these talks exposed me to research projects happening across the country and gave me ideas for future scholarship projects myself.
