the details you need to

Below is a long blog post about 31 Days of Halloween, but I’ll keep it short and sweet. Here are the details you need to know: My book 50 Scary Movies for Kids will be available at Amazon beginning on October 29th. It has been an exciting few months leading up to this day! You can read more about how I came to write such a bizarrely specific book here. If you buy my book through that link, I get paid some cash money (or in other words “royalties”). So if you want me to eat steak tonight or something like that please consider buying it from there. Thank you so much!!! I am very excited to announce that I have started writing a regular column called “Scarefest” for Parents Magazine Online. My first piece just went live today. In fact, it was picked as one of their top five articles of the week by Time magazine (well not TIME TIME per se…their online version). They even made a little video which you should watch right now because they put way too many shots of kittens into it. And finally, since you all seem to enjoy these posts, I thought I would give everyone a sneek peek behind the scenes to see what goes into making them. The photo above was taken last night when we were having our annual 31 days of costumes party. Last year, it ended with us getting arrested for being drunk-and-disorderly outside of McDonalds around midnight. This time we decided to do things differently - instead of breaking windows out of trashed cars on Main Street, we spent most of the evening trying to figure out where to go next while watching movies and eating pizza. And then after dinner, we walked home and collapsed exhausted onto each others laps. But man, did we ever have fun doing it!! We laughed until we cried and drank way too much wine and snuck out into the street several times for quick strolls down Main Avenue before returning back inside to continue drinking. This isn’t your average family gathering, let me tell you that much! It feels weird talking about myself in third person sometimes so bear with me here….but I think it might help explain why people come together every single year without fail despite living across two different states from one another (we all met during college) . There’s nothing quite like sitting down over bottles full o’ booze while watching scary movies followed by laughter punctuated only occasionally by someone yelling “OH MY GOD WHAT WAS THAT?!” At least once every hour anyway :) I hope you find yourself inspired to start celebrating halloween early too - maybe take turns hosting parties between friends who also love horror films; make sure everybody brings along their favorite movie recommendation Below is a long blog post about 45 different ways to be creative. It’s from an article by Alyson Shields at A Beautiful Mess, and I thought it would make for fun reading!

  1. Try something new – like learning how to knit or take up photography or learn another language or get into some kind of sport you haven’t tried before – anything that challenges your current skills/knowledge & makes you feel uncomfortable in the beginning but ultimately feels good when you are successful (like writing that first novel). This will help break out of any ruts which can happen over time if we don’t push ourselves sometimes–especially since most people tend towards doing what they already know well instead than trying things outside their comfort zone because it seems easier & safer . But being comfortable isn’t always best either…so keep pushing yourself beyond those limits every now again too so as not become stagnant with growth potential locked away inside us forever :) By trying something new today - even just once-you never really know where life may lead down paths unknown until explored fully through action rather than fear alone dictating choices made along way forward ahead toward whatever destiny lies waiting there ahead still further yet undiscovered perhaps somewhere deep within darkness awaiting discovery should one dare venture forth courageously enough without hesitation ever present deterring progress forward no matter cost involved risk taken upon oneself freely given totally free fully willing accepting nothing less than victory achieved hereafter proudly earned triumphantly won gloriously claimed finally accomplished successfully completed satisfactorily fulfilled happily accepted joyfully embraced enthusiastically celebrated euphoria lastingly enjoyed eternally remembered fondly cherished deeply loved infinitely valued If your name seems to pop regularly to the police report column for drug dealer charges there will more probability to land on you for charges of druganbu in Australia but one of most common criminal law offencies of this country especially after making several charges as drugs. This was written for an audience that doesn’t know much about our work, but it also provides some reflection on where I am now with my own ideas around teaching and education in general In June this year (that seems like yesterday) I gave two talks – one to a room full of academics from all over Australia and another to a group of senior leaders from schools across the Hunter region here in NSW. The theme of both presentations was ‘Teaching & Learning Innovation‘ and they were very different audiences. So what did I learn? Well firstly, that there isn’t a clear definition of innovative practice when applied to education, which makes talking about such matters difficult; secondly, that everyone has their own idea(s), sometimes contradictory ones, as to whether change needs to happen or not; thirdly, if you want people to engage then its best to talk about specific examples rather than grand theories and finally, most importantly perhaps, many educators have been thinking hard about these issues even before I started writing this post! There will be more later….. I’d really appreciate any feedback, comments etc via twitter @educatordave so please feel free to add yours. I don’t normally do this, but it was too good not to share – especially as the author makes some excellent points that are worth re-iterating (for me). The first is something we often forget and take for granted when using software: “We need to acknowledge what a tremendous amount of work goes into developing these programs so they can be used easily by people like us.” Indeed! And if you look at the number of clicks required in most 2D CAD packages today…it’s quite a lot. We get lazy and expect things to just happen with only two or three mouse clicks – while all along there has been many hundreds/thousands of hours spent on development behind those few easy clicks. It’s worth remembering whenever we complain about CAD being difficult or complex.
