During those intervening years, there have certainly been some changes in the radio landscape – both positive and negative – but perhaps none more significant than the rise and fall of AM stereo broadcasting. The introduction of HD radio technology brought with it an initial burst of excitement as broadcasters took advantage of its new digital capabilities and began programming their stations in a multitude of different formats. It seemed like there were suddenly dozens of “new” kinds of stations on the dial; everything from talk to sports, news, country, comedy…and yes, even old-time radio. But one format in particular stood apart from all others because listeners could not only hear great music again, they actually got full fidelity sound quality – something never before heard on conventional analog FM or AM signals. For many people who had grown weary of listening to today’s sterile commercial rock stations where songs are often padded by repeated verses, choruses and instrumental solos, the idea that you might be able to turn your car into a concert hall simply by tuning in to an appropriate signal proved to be irresistible. Many people bought receivers designed specifically to pick up these specialized frequencies, while countless other motorists continued using stock radios equipped with built-in monitors; most were still able to get satisfactory reception despite being far outside the recommended coverage area. In fact, so popular did AM Stereo become during its short life span that major manufacturers started making vehicles with factory installed AM stereo capability – including General Motors whose Cadillacs featured a high performance system called Sonic Blue. By late summer of 2001, the FCC made what turned out to be its final decision regarding implementation of the service nationwide; based upon a study conducted by NBC Research Center at Princeton University, they determined that reception of such programs would cause interference problems with existing services operating under standard monaural transmissions. As a result, licenses issued prior to July 1st, 2001 remain valid until further notice while no additional applications will be accepted after June 30th next year. The Current Situation Regarding the CEC Structure & Leadership First things first – let me say how much respect I have for those who have worked so hard on various projects since our last meeting back in January. There were many events throughout the past year or more where people pitched in when needed, or even stepped up at times to coordinate an event. This was great because there always seemed to be something happening every month whether it was a special speaker, or a forum discussion, etc. It has been fantastic having these types of activities throughout the year. They were well-attended by large groups from both sides of town. These efforts made me feel very optimistic about the future. But while they may not have had the participation levels necessary to sustain them permanently beyond this one time effort, they did provide opportunities for involvement. All good stuff! Now here comes the bad news. Since our last official membership meeting earlier this year, I think too few people got actively involved in keeping these programs moving forward between meetings. For example, no one attended any CEC board meetings during most of the summer and fall (a couple of weeks ago only one person showed). And in September another member resigned which meant yet again reorganization of leadership positions…and still nobody came out to help fill vacant spots until recently. So now, we are faced with the same problem once again. That means if someone does want to step up and run for chairperson or secretary, I don’t know anyone else besides myself willing to serve right away. Of course everyone should definitely consider running themselves—but seriously folks…isn’t there ANYONE interested enough to take charge before March? I mean come ON!!! How could we possibly expect anything to move ahead without new blood?? At least one other member would also like to see improvement within our organization itself rather than just focus entirely upon outside issues such as immigration reform and healthcare access initiatives."
